For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. – James 1:23-24 NKJV
When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior we become new creatures. God cleans us up nicely from the inside out, but the temptation of sin never leaves us. If we are not vigilant we can easily fall into a sinful cycle that is hard to break. As time goes on you begin to lose sight of who you are and whose you are.
So picture yourself standing in front of a bathroom mirror. There’s something in your eyes and you splash water in your face so you can see clearly again. This is the same process that applies in situations where you need a spiritual splash in the face. Instead of water you use the Word of God to remind you of who you are and whose you are.
Remember that you are called to be a hearer of the word and a doer. We need to know the word and do what the word says in order to have success as disciples of Jesus Christ. No matter what you go through, never forget who you are and whose you are.
