What Really Matters: A Moment of Reflection

Here we are in this beautiful Spring season of 2020. The birds are chirping, the sun shines longer, and the flowers are blooming. Yet one day while praying in my closet I looked up at my recent additions and sighed. I saw the summer jumpsuits, floral spring tops, and light green shorts. I had plans to wear them to concerts, weddings, and fairs. But with the coronavirus pandemic impacting our world, the clothes and my plans didn’t matter as much.

I was reminded of how fragile we are and how temporary everything on earth really is. I started praising God that my hope and joy was anchored in more than earthly things that can perish.

This is highlighted from my very first blog “100 Things To Be Grateful For”. In times like these it’s good to revisit the many things to be grateful for. I looked at my list today and found mostly everything still applies. Some things will change due to circumstances, but the things of God are eternal. I encourage you too to reflect on what really matters and write things to be grateful for. Always keep some intangible things in mind that can’t be taken away. Like joy, peace, faith, and a song in your heart.

Like I Trust You: Trusting in God

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths – Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV

I love revisiting the definition of words. Trust is the firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. If that is the case shouldn’t we find it easiest to trust God above anyone or anything else? This scripture suggests that the thing that hinders us the most from trusting in God is our own understanding.

Leaning to our own understanding can cause us to worry, doubt, move to fast, or not move forward at all. But if we live our lives like we trust God then He will direct our path. Sometimes we need to be still like we trust Him. Other times we need to move forward in boldness and got for it like we trust Him. Then there are times where we need to let go like we trust Him. What form of trust is God asking from you today? It can be one or a combination of all three in different aspects of our lives. So trust God like you know He is reliable, able, truthful, all powerful, and faithful to come through.

Managing Our Thought Life

Sometimes our thoughts can really do a number on us. I liken it to cars on the highway. Some thoughts zoom in and out of our minds like speeding cars. Then there are the other kind of thoughts that like broken down cars on the side of the road, they tend to linger in our mind. They over stay there welcome although the negative thoughts were never really welcomed. They pull over on our territory without asking for permission.

Since our mind is our territory we have the ultimate say so on what stays and what has to go. The truth is most of us aren’t walking in our authority enough. We have been given the authority by God to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5 NKJV).

To combat our thoughts we have to use our mouth. That’s why it’s perfectly normal to talk to yourself ,encourage yourself, pray out loud and read the Bible out loud. Acknowledge that those thoughts are there and expose them. You can expose those negative thoughts in private with you and God or you can talk with family, a friend, or wise counsel at your local church.

The most important thing is that those negative thoughts do not stay in your mind. So treat those bad thoughts like a broken down car in your territory. Call the tow truck man (aka Jesus) because those thoughts aren’t welcomed in your mind anymore.

Don’t Let Past Failures Keep You From Reaching Ahead

But one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal of the upward call of God in Jesus Christ

Philippians 3:13-14 NKJV

For the past week I’ve been doing a “Show Up” challenge. During this challenge I push myself to be more intentional and disciplined spiritually, musically, and financially. All the while I’ve been meditating on this verse daily. By the end of the week I knew why I needed this verse engraved in my mind.

I needed this verse to build me up because I’m prone to do the opposite. I tend to remember my mess ups and then let fear and discouragement keep me from trying again.

But there is something special that happens when you meditate on the word of God. His word is alive and it can empower you if you let it. So if you’ve been letting the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game then get that good word in you. Meditate on it so much that you begin to believe the truth over the lie.

The truth is God did not give us the spirit of fear. The truth is on the other side of our fears and comfort zones are our biggest blessings and breakthroughs.

So today I’m encouraging you to do your own “Show Up” challenge. Push yourself to show up and be consistent with the things you know you need to do but you don’t always want to do. You can do it! We can do it!! 🙂

Don’t Give Up, God is Standing With You

And lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

– Matthew 28:20 NKJV

Recently I did a cover on YouTube of the song “I’m Standing With You” by Chrissy Metz. It was on the soundtrack for the movie “Breakthrough”. The lyrics of the song are very beautiful and powerful. I always thought of it from the perspective of me singing the song to a loved one. But today as I was singing that song this morning it was like God was singing that song to me.

It hit me especially hard when the lyrics say, “And when you think that all the odds are all against you, and you just feel like giving up well I won’t let you.” God made it perfectly clear that He is still with me and He is still with you too. Even when we don’t deserve it, God is still with us. Even when we sabotage our own blessings God is still there to help us.

So if you feel disqualified and are thinking about giving up on the assignments that God has called you to then this message is for you. God doesn’t want you to give up, He wants you to keep going and take heart in knowing that He is standing with you.

Blessed Is The Man Who Endures

Blessed is the man who endures temptation – James 1:12 NKJV

Last month I wrote about letting go of worthless things. But the truth is it is easier to say than to do or stay consistent with. Our spirit always wants to do right, but our flesh can really put up a fight when it wants to. Sometimes you’re good for a few days and then the next day the urge to sin is almost unbearable.

This is why we have to be vigilant. Whenever thoughts to give into temptation begin to arise, remember that blessed is the man who endures temptation. To endure means to last and persist. In order to endure temptation we have to feed our spirit more than our flesh. We have to stay connected to God through prayer and His written word. Ephesians 6: 17 says the word of God is the sword of the Spirit. So let’s pick up our swords and persist past our temptations.

If It Wasn’t For Your Word

One night my soul was distressed
I was crying on the floor
Feeling so low I couldn’t form many words
All my soul could do was moan
But in the mist of my pain I found Your word comforting me
Scriptures of Your truth kept coming back to me
I know the verse that says I would have lost heart,
Unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living
But honestly I would have lost heart if it wasn’t for Your word within me
The constant replaying of Your word wouldn’t let me believe a lie
It is the sword of the Spirit that helps me fight the battles inside
Sure I’ve had bad thoughts, but they never seem to stick around long
In times of trouble and sorrow I remember that the Lord is my strength and my song
So I’m thankful for Your word that is always there for me
It is a constant reminder of God’s love for me
It is my treasure
It is my delight
God Your Word Is The Center Of My Life

Letting Go of Worthless Things

Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, And revive me in Your way.

Psalm 119:37 NKJV

In my previous post I talked about revival and what the word revive really means. Revival is a great thing to desire and ask God and the Holy Spirit for, but from reading the scriptures I noticed something that can hinder our own personal revival. In fact it is our constant consumption of worthless things that keeps God from reviving us in His way.

The truth is it is so easy to become distracted and even addicted to worthless things. Some of the things we consume are sinful, and others are simply just not beneficial. So if you have been seeking a spiritual refreshing but haven’t seen much change, then I suggest that you evaluate what are the worthless things in your life that might be a hinderance to you and your relationship with the Lord.

Right now it is Spring Cleaning season, however it it also the season of renewal and nature around us is coming back to life. There is a correlation between pruning the dead things in our lives and embracing the new. Now is the time to decide what is worth keeping and what should be thrown away. I pray that you decide to let go of some worthless things today because sweet revival is on the way!

To everything there is a season. A time to keep and a time to throw away.

– Ecclesiastes 3: 1, 6 NKJV

Revive Me O Lord

Revive me, O Lord according to Your lovingkindness

– Psalm 119: 159 NKJV

It’s the beginning of Spring and we’re starting to see the April showers. The refreshing water and warmer weather breathes life into the dry lands that were affected by the harsh Winter. As humans sometimes we go through dry patches in our life where we need something as refreshing as a cool glass of water or as warm as the rays from the Sun to breathe new life into us. But truth be told the greatest refreshing that you can ever receive is from the Lord.

The word “revive” is used a lot in scripture, especially in the book of Psalm. Revive means restore to life. Synonyms for revive are refresh, energize, strengthen, and renew. So are you in need of a revival? Have you grown weary and need a touch from the Lord to strengthen you and give you new energy?

If you answered yes then know that revival starts with getting in the presence of God and reading His word. In your prayers say “Revive Me O Lord.” Sometimes God might call you to a fast or a personal retreat just so you can disconnect from the noise of the world and get refreshed by Him. Get new instruction, strategy, and creative ideas from Him. May the Lord drop a sweet revival onto you!

All of My Help Comes From the Lord

My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.

Psalm 121:2 NKJV

Recently I heard my little cousin sing a beautiful song for her church Choir Day titled “My Help (Cometh From The Lord)” by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. I heard it for the first time that day and the song totally touched my soul. I could tell that song had to have come straight from the scriptures and it did. It came from Psalm 121, which is titled “God the Help of Those Who Seek Him”.

As we continue to live we will eventually run into situations where we have exhausted all of our natural resources and have reached the end of our own natural ability to accomplish a task. It is then that we see God’s mighty strength shine the most.

So if you know that you’re doing all that you can do and you need divine intervention then it’s time for you to seek God today. Stay in a constant posture of seeking Him. Be honest with Him about what areas you desire help in. God delights in helping His children. God has given all of us assignments on earth and He wants nothing more than to help us in completing those assignments and completing our race. From the beginning of time we were created to do life with God so seek God today.
